There’s a place in Damansara Utama that I usually frequent to, and that’s Battery Acid Club. The name does sound like some car workshop at first, but actually it’s a really nice quaint cafe. What attracted me to the place was when someone told me they sell Braun watches – a German brand. As a big fan of watches (cheap or expensive – it’s their design that matters to me) I was excited. Because as far as I know, very little shops carry this brand. I thought to myself this place must be very unique.
It has very clean and minimalistic design, and you could tell that the owners themselves are designers or avid fan of art / design. If I could say it, its design is really one of a kind, indeed something unique. Within the cafe itself, they sell cakes, coffee, the usual fares, but there is a store within the cafe. The store (confined by glass walls) features properly curated accessories, apparels, stationery, books and cosmetics which you couldn’t find elsewhere. It may be the design, but it’s one of the few places where you can get a good quiet time reading a book or so.
Now, I always thought to myself “I wouldn’t want that store to go away, but wouldn’t it be cool if there’s a barber in here…”
Fresh From The Oven
And then when I was there again, the store no longer exist! But there it is – a barbershop called The Oven took over the store! What a cool name. And to my surprise, its Kevin “Cottie” Tan from Amplitude Barbershop who took over the store. What a small world, indeed. Now Kevin is a heavyweight in the industry by now, and he is not only popular for his barbering skills. He is also the man behind Mentega Pomade. A home brewed oil based pomade.
Gladly enough, the barbershop looks as good as the store used to be, and I dare to say it’s one of the most good looking barbershop I’ve seen so far (mind you, I’m not getting paid to say all this). The neon light signboard was on cue and the use of the existing fixtures just blended in so well. The cool thing is, there are no brick walls, just glass walls, so his skills are all on display. And, I’ve no doubts on Kevin’s barbering skills, given the feedback I’ve heard, and the fully-booked-all-the-time slots back in Amplitude Barbershop.
There are space for two barber chairs in The Oven, so when the barbershop gets busier (which could very well be soon), you’re likely to have to be in a waiting line. Nevertheless, Kevin has this all planned out – there will be a booking site where you could reserve a spot so you don’t have to try your luck walking in. And even if all fails, you can still have a cup of coffee and some cakes while waiting. I’ve recently written about Kopicut in Kuching which is a barbershop-cum-cafe. I think it makes sense, given that the minimum waiting time for a haircut may take up to half an hour to an hour, you might as well indulge in some food and drinks.
